A. 表示职责、义务。意为“必须，应该”(should)

You must clean the room before I come back. 你必须在我回来前打扫房间。

Students must work hard at their study. 学生应该努力学习。

注意： 对must的疑问句的肯定和否定回答。

—Must we hand in our exercise—books now? 我们现在就要交练习本吗？

—Yes，you must. 是的，必须交。 

—No，you needn’t. / No，you don’t have to. 不必。

（一般不用mustn’t，表示“禁止，不许”）

B. 表示非常有把握的推测，意为“准是、一定” (drawing a logical conclusion)

must have done “一定已经做过某事了”，表示对过去的推测。

He must be ill. He looks so pale. 他准是病了。他的脸色苍白。

The ground is so wet，so it must have rained last night. 地面很湿，昨晚一定是下雨了。

C. 表示出于说话人的主观意识而必须要做某事。(indicating obligation)

You must do as you are told，or you will be punished.

D. mustn’t, 表示“禁止，不许” (forbade)

You mustn’t leave without my permission. 没有我的允许不许离开。

We must not speak ill of others. 我们一定不要说别人的坏话。

E.（表示与说话人愿望相反） 坚持要，偏偏，偏要 (indicating insistence)

If you must go，at least wait till the rain stops. 如果你坚持要走，至少也要等雨停了。
